How to edit animation that has effect error unsupported feature

Hello community, first time posting here. I have a file that I want to tweak but I am getting an error when trying to edit it in Lottie creator. Before opening the file Lottie creator says the file has unsupported features. It gives further information about the error and states it is a custom effect error.

I am new to Lottie files and don’t know what effect the file is using that is causing this issue. I want to make simple changes to the file like move and align things because they are not properly center aligned. I also want to know if the animation is using any standard or custom easing functions for creating its animation but I also don’t know if this is possible to inspect within Lottie files or tools that work with Lotties.

Thank you for any help.

Hi @leonardo1

Could you please share the file with me so I can take a closer look? Thanks!

Hi Haleeza, thank you for the help. Here is the share link generated from the lottie app online.

Could you please enable download permissions on the shared link? Thank you in advance!

Hi Haleeza, I wasn’t able to find where download permissions settings are defined. Can you share a walkthrough or screen capture about where to do this please? Thank you.

Hi @haleeza I still wasn’t able to find where download permissions are set so I published the animation to the community. Does this help you to access it? Here is the link generated when publishing to the community: Free scrollyLottie Animation by Leonardo Aguiar | LottieFiles

Thank you for your time.

Hi @Leonardo1

To allow downloads via the sharing link, simply enable the sharing link first. Once enabled, you’ll see an option to “allow downloads” and toggle it on.

The reason your file isn’t working in Lottie Creator is because it uses features that aren’t supported, custom expressions and track matte masking (used for the arrow animation). These effects don’t render properly in Lottie Creator, which is why parts of the animation are missing.

As an alternative, you can open the file in Adobe After Effects using the LottieFiles for AE plugin. This will let you import the JSON file directly and make edits. I exported the file into AE project (.aep) file (download here) so you can easily open them in AE.

Let me know if you need help with that!

Hi @haleeza thank you for showing where the allow download setting is located. The link I shared previously should now have the download permission enabled.

I do not have adobe after effects. Are there any other tools, preferably free, that can be used to edit this lottie file? From a quick search online I found only one called Synfig Studio but I still have to test it for masking and if the motion of the animation has definable functions.

Do you recommend any free tools? Thank you for your help once again.

Sorry, I’m not so sure about Synfig Studio myself. But the Lottie Creator tool should be a good free option if you’re looking to edit Lottie animation. At the moment, some effects may not be fully supported, but it should work well for simple animations and our team is actively working on adding more features too.
